Active learning movement: paratroopers' unexpected rescue
Teaching leadership in Japan eight years ago was like para-trooping. You go down into a hostile area behind the enemy line, get readily surrounded, outnumbered, and cut off. The enemy does not understand the meaning of “emergent leadership,” “relational leadership,” nor “shared leadership”. So you always have to fight for legitimacy of leadership education. But in recent years, strong friendlies are coming from a totally unexpected direction. It is “active learning” movement in colleges in Japan. You need at least some degree of leadership on the part of students for active learning to happen in classroom. Therefore, you have to teach leadership to your students BEFORE they take courses which are supposed to be taught in active-learning way. So now it is legitimate, appropriate and even imperative to teach leadership in high school and freshman year in college.
