I had Asking Questions (Action Learning) workshop with G12, APLP last week. The structure of the workshop is basically the same as the last year (G11). On Day 1 facilitators (action learning coaches) were trained. I called for 12 volunteers to attend this training session and fortunately all positions were filled within just two hours since the application started!

Day one. Three official coaches, Tomono Miki, Yuta Morinaga and me, certified by Japan Institute for Action Learning (JIAL) (who are COB Rikkyo professors as well) and Andrew Soh from G11 served as coaches on Day one. In the second session two people from G12 (non-native speakers!) volunteered to sit as coaches and they went on to serve as coach’s coach on Day two.

On Day two ten people from Day one sat as coaches in turn for two sessions. They seemed to enjoy the workshop very much and did the grouping and logistics for Day two as well. 29 people of G12, including the 12 volunteers were divided into 5 groups and had two sessions within 3 hours.

Clearly 6 hours is not enough for training of action learning coaches. Coaches made some deviations (excessive improvisations) from the template. Some of them could not resist stepping into the contents of the discussion and dared to summarize the discussion in their own words. Another coach liked the development of the discussion too much to move on to next steps like action plan and reflections. Still they did a great job having the members experience how one small question can change the entire course of discussion, how asking question can be leadership, or how coaching is effective for learning and teamwork.

Thanks to the eagerness to learn of G12, the workshop was a great success. I owe a lot to Andrew Soh of G11 and those who volunteered for coaches, entire G12, and APLP faculty (Nick and Scott) who thoughtfully placed this workshop close to the module of “adaptive leadership”.

Asia Pacific Leadership Programの第12期生(G12)を対象にアクション･ラーニング(質問会議)を行いました.　ワークショップの構成は基本的に昨年度と同じで,　第一日目は少数の志願者にALコーチ速成講座を行います.　本年度は12名の枠で志願者を募ったところ募集開始から2時間で定員が埋まりました.

初日,　日本から合流した三木･森永助教と日向野(三人は日本アクション・ラーニング協会の認定コーチで,森永さんと私はアメリカの協会でもコーチ講座を受けました)と,昨年度のG11出身者Andrew Soh君がコーチになりました(班は2つだったので実際は三木･Sohの二人).　第二セッションでは二人が立候補してコーチ役をつとめました(立候補したのは非英語圏の人たちでした!)　

二日目は,　この12人を含むG12全員つまり29人を5つの班に分け(班分けや名札の用意なども初日の志願者たちがやってくれました),　2つのセッションに初日組の残り10人が入り,　初日の二人や教員たちはコーチの後ろで助言する役に回りました.両日併せても6時間にしかならないワークショップは,コーチ養成としては明らかに時間不足で,速成コーチたちはいろいろ逸脱(行き過ぎた即興)をやってくれていました.　あるコーチは,じれて議論の内容を手際よく自分の言葉で要約していましたし,　別のコーチは議論の進展に感動したため次のステップに進もうとしませんでした.　それでも,　コーチたちは,　一つの短い質問が議論全体の方向を決定的に変えてしまうことがあることや,　質問することがリーダーシップになりうることや,　コーチがいるおかげで学習やチームワークがうまくいくことなどを,メンバーに経験させるという重要な役目を果たしてくれました.

第12期の皆さんの熱心さのおかげでワークショップは成功したと思います.　Andrew Soh君や初日に志願してくれた皆さん,それに12期全体,さらにはこのワークショップを賢明にもadaptive leadershipの翌週に配置してくれたAPLPコア教員諸氏にも感謝したいと思います.
